It is an historical chestnut that as a rising power begins to equal a hegemonic superior, the two come into conflict. Many past cases testify to this phenomenon. The question is whether it will apply to the United States and China in the future. In the June 2009 issue of Foreign Affairs, Elizabeth Economy and Adam Segal suggest that placing the US-China relationship within a more inclusive context involving other states will lead to a bilateral solution. This may or may not be correct. What is certainly true, however, is that neglecting the potential tensions in the US-China relationship will guarantee a negative outcome. In six of seven historical cases where one power approximated or surpassed another, conflict occurred. 떠오르는 권력이 기존의 강대국을 따라잡을 즈음에는 두 나라 간에 다툼이 발생하게 된다는 것은 역싸 속의 오래된 이야기일 뿐이다. 잡지에 introduce된 내용이 맞을지도 틀릴지도 모른다. 그것이 미국과 中國의 future 관계에도 적용될 지 의문이다. 많은 과거의 instance(사례)들이 이런 현상을 입증한다.
